Our First Geek Markets, An Unexpected, Pleasant Surprise

This was our first Geek Markets selling our books, and being the longest market day I’ve ever experienced behind a stall, I didn’t know what to expect. In fact, I never expected it to end with me not feeling overstimulated.
I’ve been to many markets this year, and all of them have left me completely exhausted. The constant sounds, movement, and energy from people often push me into overstimulation, making the day feel overwhelming. This time, however, was completely different. There was plenty of sensory input, but it only ever slowed me down in processing words and people rather than overwhelming me. Being able to manage such an incredibly long, busy day and still feel engaged and present was a huge milestone for me personally. It showed me that with the right environment and pacing, even challenging days can be enjoyable rather than draining.

For the future, we’re planning to bring our books back to the Geek Markets and explore other events like Oz Comic Con and Supanova. It also seems we are finding exactly the right audience. More people recognised us and our book, and more people showed interest in our work. Our highest number of books sold at a single market was a real highlight and a moment of celebration for our small business.
This first Geek Markets experience has been a wonderful surprise. Ending the day not with exhaustion but with excitement, discovering our audience, and reaching new milestones makes me hopeful for all the markets ahead.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us and our business during our first year.
