When I was little and feeling left out, uncertain, or like the odd bean out, Mum would always say: “Be yourself; everyone else is taken.”
She said it whenever we were unsure about who we are. Honestly? It’s magic.
The Challenge of Being Yourself
Here’s the thing: Being yourself isn’t always easy. It can feel risky, especially when you don’t see anyone around you who thinks, moves, or feels the way you do. But Mum never wanted me to be anyone else. She never asked me to change to fit in. She just reminded me that who I am, along with all my quirks, big feelings, sensory overloads, and creative explosions, is enough.

Following Your Passions
When I started leaning into what I loved, drawing, making stories, creating weird little characters, she said something else that changed everything: “Do what you love, and we’ll figure out a way for you to make money.”
That’s not advice you hear every day, but it’s been my compass. Not because it’s about money, but because it’s about value. It’s about believing that what lights you up can also light up the world.
Your Inner Spark
Now I want to turn that back to you. Are you being true to yourself? Are you the one who gets overlooked, misunderstood, or told to “tone it down” or “fit in”? Are you listening to your inner spark? That part that knows what it loves, even if it’s not what everyone else is doing?
Because the world needs that spark. Your weirdness, your kindness, your perspective. Whether you’re loud or soft, bold or thoughtful, sparkly or subtle, you matter. There is nothing more powerful than being real in a world that keeps trying to tell you who to be.
Embrace Your Weirdness
So wear the socks you love, speak in your own rhythm, and make the art that excites you. Tell the story that’s been burning inside you. Chase that idea that won’t leave you alone.
Surround yourself with people who see the real you. If you haven’t found them yet, know that you’re not alone. I see you.
Final Thoughts
And just in case no one’s told you today: You rock!
Love, Nat 💚
